A potted history of Vaujany

Vaujany is one of the thirty municipalities that form the canton of Oisans-Romanche in the north of the department of Isère, near the border with Savoie.

Its name derives from the Latin Via Janus, meaning “gateway route”, in reference to its position overlooking Savoie (Sabaudia). Vaujany’s history is closely linked to that of the historic province of Dauphiné, of which it marked the last outpost before reaching Savoie.

Covering 7,154 hectares, this vast high-mountain municipality relied primarily on mountain farming and livestock breeding until the 1990s. As traditional agriculture became increasingly difficult to sustain, the village experienced a gradual decline in population, a trend further accelerated by the construction of the Grand’Maison hydroelectric scheme. While embracing tourism, Vaujany has successfully preserved the authenticity and character of a true mountain village.

Vaujany, the discreet one

Vaujany is one of those truly charming mountain resorts, cherished by those who know it well and still kept as a well-guarded secret. A village resort of the kind that has become increasingly rare within the major alpine destinations.

Authentic in winter, it reveals even more of its character in summer, through its strong traditions, the distinctive architecture of its alpine village and an environment that moves at nature’s own pace. A place for lovers of peace, wide-open spaces and a more mindful way of experiencing the mountains.

As the road winds through a succession of traditional hamlets, the scenery unfolding on arrival already feels picture-perfect: a postcard setting nestled on the slopes of Le Rissiou at 1,250 metres above sea level, amid some of the most beautiful alpine meadows and richest biodiversity in the region. As if not to disturb the grandeur of the landscape, the village seems to blend discreetly into the mountainside, facing the Grandes Rousses massif and the Cascade de la Fare.

Welcome to one of the last bastions of an authentic and thoughtfully developed mountain destination. A hidden gem offering unique, carefully curated experiences and a genuinely personalised welcome.
