Practical information: winter equipment

The “Loi Montagne” regulation (Mountain Law), set out in Article L314-1 of the French Highway Code, states that between 1 November and 31 March, certain winter equipment may be required in designated mountain areas to improve traffic flow and road safety.

It applies to all four-wheel vehicles (cars, camper vans, vans, buses), which must be equipped with either:

  • 4 winter or all-season tyres marked with the 3PMSF symbol (alpine symbol with a snowflake),
  • or removable anti-skid devices (such as snow chains or snow socks) stored in the vehicle and suitable for at least two drive wheels.

This requirement applies even in the absence of immediate snow, as soon as you are in a signposted area. Please check your vehicle in advance and ask your rental agency if needed.
